For our non greek
visitors to this site, Frixos is how Greeks pronounce it as a first name, when taken to the
surname it then becomes Frixou.
The earliest recognition of the name Frixou, comes from the mytholigical story of 'Frixos & Elli', she was
the daughter of a goddess - Nefeli, married with Athamas the son of Aiolos who was the king of winds. She had 2 children with
Athamas : Frixos and Elli. Later on Athamas threw her out from the palace because he married another woman - Ino.
She was very jealous of Nefeli's kids as Athamas loved them a lot. With a devious trick, Ino plotted to sacrifice Frixos
in the name of Zeus, but at the last moment, their mother Nefeli sent a goldhair sheep buck that Hermes had given to her as
a gift. Immediately Frixos with Elli jumped on the animal and they flew away. As they approached Propontis Ellie fell
and drowned in the sea. This sea was named Ellispontos.
Because of a shortage of early records, researching a family
line can be a tasking experience. But, what if your Greek ancestors were in the habit of changing surnames with each generation?
